Top 5 experiences in Lima for Foodies

Food tours have gained popularity due to the possibility of fully absorbing the essence of a place through its gastronomy: either learning about the ingredients directly from the hand of artisan producers, traditional cooks and specialists in food and drink, or participating in the process of preparing the dishes together with local chefs. Food is how we express our love for our country and its history, and being able to share all of that with the world fills us with joy for foodies!

Peru has been recognized as the best gastronomic destination for 8 consecutive years by the World Travel Awards – the Oscar for Tourism Awards. The variety of flavors and cooking techniques, many even unique in the region, as well as the stories behind our dishes increasingly attract all those travelers in search of a trip out of the ordinary.

Then, What is it about Lima that makes it such a special culinary destination? What we like the most is that it is the point where all Peruvian gastronomy converges. All the flavors are here! Lima is brimming with history and culture. Lima cuisine combines the ancient pre-Hispanic heritage and external influences, such as Spanish and Chinese, which provide us with delicious “Creole” dishes such as Ceviche, Causa, Lomo Saltado and Picarones.

Lima foodiesWe want you to stop seeing Lima as a transition point to visit other beautiful parts of our country. The habits of travelers have changed so much in recent years that we now see people from countries close to Peru who come exclusively to Lima just for a weekend to eat. However, most travelers arrive in the country without realizing the incredible variety of experiences hidden in the corners of the city, and they tend to miss out on the magic that is celebrated here.

Let’s take a look at what you can do in Lima if you are a foodie!

1. Flavors of Peru

For foodie travelers with a short stay in Lima, this is the IDEAL experience. We will visit the first gastronomic market in Peru, where people not only go to eat, but also come to ‘market’, visit the stalls and get lost among new aromas and flavors.

In this experience, together with a local host, you will meet and taste the different foods of the Peruvian coast, mountains and jungle… all in one place! In addition, you will learn how to prepare our star dish, ceviche, and our flagship drink, the delicious Pisco Sour.

2. The Cevichera Route

In the Peruvian territory, ceviche is part of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation and of our identity in all regions. The preparation arose in the pre-Columbian period, about two thousand years ago, and is currently one of the most famous dishes of our gastronomy.

Ceviche consists -basically- of raw fish cooked with lemon juice and accompanied with corn, sweet potato, onion, chili, among other delicious secrets. However, Peru offers a wide variety of ceviches, all different and delicious, which are the result of different influences, regional inputs and the creativity of Peruvians.

In this tour we will learn about the history and evolution of ceviche, we will taste from the most traditional to the most innovative fusions and we will verify that both market ceviches (or huarique) and those from award-winning restaurants have their charm. We will visit 4 restaurants in the city to try a Nikkei ceviche, an Amazonian one, a very “modern” one, and finally a classic ceviche.

Without a doubt, it will be a festival of flavors.

3. Art and gastronomy in Callao Monumental

Knowing Monumental Callao, which was one of the spiciest neighborhoods and is today one of the most important references of art and social transformation in Peru, is something that few do and we highly recommend, especially for foodies.

Callao is a fantastic combination of elements: the main port of Peru, ancient architecture, urban art and gastronomy. Our tour will begin in a traditional Lima resort full of history, and then we will visit Callao Monumental, the epicenter of mural art that houses new and avant-garde art galleries along with classic seafood restaurants. Here, a local artist will tell you about the importance that art has had for the social transformation of the area. On the terrace of the main building we will prepare a cocktail as an aperitif, enjoying a privileged view and, finally, we will go down to a nice traditional restaurant to enjoy a 5-step tasting of old-time Lima recipes.

This route is only for those who dare to experience like a true local among the picturesque characters of the port.

4. The Pisco Route

Pisco is a brandy with a lot of personality, originally from Peru and the nation’s cultural heritage. It is a fragrant drink, extremely seductive and strong, but very delicate.

In this paragraph, we talk about Barranco It is the heart of art and culture in Lima, known as the bohemian district. Home to the most prestigious art galleries, cultural bars and live music venues. Here you can find all kinds of bars: from beautiful boutique hotels and craft breweries, to the most traditional bars housed in mansions from the late 19th – early 20th centuries.

Above all, on this tour, we combine these two elements to create a unique and very local experience. Moreover, our host will take you to your favorite bars in Barranquilla full of good stories and top bartenders to learn how to prepare a classic Pisco Sour and try different creations based on this distillate such as macerates and signature cocktails.

Prepared with us this majestic drink with more than 100 years of history and legends to tell you. Health!

5. Historic Foodie Center

Lima is one of the largest cities in the region and the only South American capital by the sea that will captivate you with its tradition.

Particularly, touring its historic center, declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is living with the past and the present. Its beautiful squares and monuments; its imposing mansions with colonial and republican balconies, and its multiple churches that house priceless works of art make it the perfect setting to embark on an adventure.

Furthermore,

we start the day with a traditional Peruvian breakfast. Then, we visit the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, a beautiful Franciscan monastery and a large house to learn about the lifestyle of colonial Lima. Then, we will enjoy a “well served” lunch of traditional Peruvian food in a restaurant located in a beautiful renovated mansion that is more than a century old. Finally, a digestive liquor will be very necessary after lunch, so we will end the day learning and tasting our flagship drink: pisco. Sounds more interesting than just visiting a few museums, right?

Join us to go through history through its flavors.
